Wonderful mystery of the gift of angels
God mobilises his angels to help us, says Jo Marks – and not just at Christmas!
When we read the story of the birth of Jesus or watch the Nativity acted out there is always a star role: the Angel Gabriel.
The Angel Gabriel is one of only two named angels in the Bible, and he had an important mission. He was sent to Mary to bring clear direction ‒ a message from God to guide, comfort and encourage Mary in what would have been an overwhelming time for her as a young woman.
Angels are written about throughout all of Scripture. Angels are real and ever-present in our lives today, but so many times we miss them as we are too distracted, or spiritually ‘sleepy’ or maybe simply don’t believe.
Psalm 103:20 (TLV) states: “Bless Adonai, you angels of his: mighty in strength, performing his word, upon hearing the utterance of his word.”
I was so struck by this verse. Angels are waiting in heaven to be mobilised by God for each one of us who believes in him. The Bible describes the mobilisation of angels in powerful ways. They “encamp around those who fear him,” (Psalm 34:7). They rescue us when we are in difficult circumstances. An angel shut the mouths of the lions for Daniel (Dan 6:21). They are mighty warriors in spiritual battle (Dan 10:13).
This is real for us today. They are messengers, sent on missions or in military action for us today.
