Great leaders are God's gift
Leadership is rewarding – and demanding. Leadership is having a moment. Books, podcasts, conferences and social media feeds are packed with opinions about what makes a good leader.
Yet, for all the discussion, there is still considerable disagreement about what leadership actually is.
Some say leadership is primarily about facilitation – helping people discover their own direction and potential. Others emphasise vision, authority and decisive action. One approach focuses on listening, the other on leading. One champions collaboration, the other clarity.
Christians need not choose between these extremes. Scripture offers a richer picture. God works through his people collectively, but he repeatedly raises up individuals who become catalysts for his purposes.
He calls men and women who help others recognise what God is doing, then lead them towards it. Moses led Israel out of Egypt. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem. Paul planted churches across the Roman world. David united a fractured nation.
In every case, God worked through many people – but he also worked through a leader.
That matters because the pressures of ministry, criticism, fatigue and changing cultural attitudes can leave leaders quietly wondering whether their contribution still counts.
It does.
Healthy leadership remains one of God’s gifts to his people. Perhaps a helpful definition is this: leadership is influencing others through godly example to move towards God’s purpose and mission.
