Don’t compromise on your standards
How can you be holy when everything around you compromises God’s standards, asks James Aladiran of Prayer Storm.
“In Elijah’s day there was sexual perversion across the land and the prophets were scared to speak out because Jezebel killed those who did,” says James Aladiran.
“It’s an extreme example, but there are great patterns in the Bible that help us understand the age we’re living in.”
James is talking about holiness in an age where God’s standards are being compromised just about everywhere you look – a topic he explored at a Limitless Leaders gathering earlier this year.
Mixed messages
James began by examining this compromise, explaining that the way Jezebel infiltrated her culture was through a mixture of Baal and Yahweh worship.
“The people of God were confused and it’s a similar picture now,” he says.
Mercifully, Christians in the UK are unlikely to be killed for their faith but we have a confusing mix of cultures, even in church.
“We have a church that’s meant to be different and set apart, but sometimes it seems to want to look like the world in order to reach the world.
“With that, our standards start dropping. We start living according to the world around us and over time biblical standards are lowered to those of our culture, instead of us challenging our culture to rise to the standard of Scripture.”
TV, TikTok and faith
Much of that compromise centres around sexuality, sexual identity and sexual sin, says James.
“It’s one of the main areas where a generation is being rewired in its thinking as to what is OK and what’s not.”
