An undivided heart offers real power
Are you wholeheartedly united with God’s plan? asks Liam Husband.
In Psalm 86:11, David prays, “Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” This is a passionate plea from a man living with a heart scattered in countless directions.
Eugene Peterson’s version expresses it like this: “Put me together, one heart and mind; then, undivided, I’ll worship in joyful fear.” It’s a cry for wholeness, a desire for the soul to be united in focus, purpose, and devotion.
Divided heart
Living with a divided heart can be exhausting. It leads to uncertainty, broken promises, and frustration. People with divided hearts often find themselves flitting from one relationship to another, one job to the next, or one promise to another, unable to settle or commit.
The pressures of the world around us, continuously pulling us in different directions, seem to magnify this restlessness and uncertainty. The Bible offers a powerful example through the men of Zebulun in 1 Chronicles 12:33. These soldiers are described as “men of singleness of purpose”, fully committed to supporting David. Their devotion wasn’t half-hearted; they weren’t torn between Saul and David, but were wholeheartedly united with God’s plan. This focused commitment contrasts with the divided heart, struggling with competing priorities and conflicting desires.
Worries distract
Jesus warns us in Mathew 13:22 about the ‘weeds’ of life ‒ the worries of this world and the deceitfulness of wealth. Wrestling with these distractions can choke the Word of God, preventing it from bearing fruit in our lives.
