
Prodigal son Ben returns
Rugby Union flanker Ben Earl has returned to the England fold like a prodigal son, revealing the importance of his Christian faith in his sporting career.
The Saracens player had been a regular feature for the three lions since his debut international in 2020, helping them win a Six Nations title and the Autumn Nations Cup.
But he was left out of the Six Nations campaign in 2022, speaking of his frustration at not being able to play for his country, before returning for last year’s dramatic England title bid.
Earl, 27, earnt his 25th cap in the heartbreaking late 33-31 Paris defeat to France which ended English hopes of snatching the crown from Ireland.
It was, however, an improved campaign for England with Earl in the team, as he added two tries, including one in a shock win over Ireland at Twickenham.
He told Rugby World it was “massively frustrating” to be dropped in 2022, but it had strengthened his “resolve” to return.
Meanwhile, he was sustained by his faith, which has also helped him with injuries, the most recent of which he counted as a blessing.
“I had an injury not long ago, just before Christmas (2023), and I was out for a good chunk of time – probably the longest I’ve ever been out.”
He had injured his meniscus in a pre-game warm-up, but told Premier Christianity: “It kind of gave me another chance to reflect on where I am as a player and as a person, but also the idea that everything happens for a reason.
