Taking their faith to the field

DR Congo’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreak – but before the Leopards left the pitch they fell to their knees, giving glory to Jesus.

After their 2-1 Round of 32 defeat to England in Atlanta, Congolese players gathered on the pitch to pray rather than disappear straight down the tunnel.

The moving scene followed a brave performance in which Brian Cipenga stunned England with a seventh-minute opener, before Harry Kane struck twice late on to send Thomas Tuchel’s side through.

For DR Congo, it was still a World Cup of history. Days earlier, after beating Uzbekistan 3-1, the team had reached the knockout stages for the first time.

Players and coaches then gathered around the centre circle, praying aloud, lifting their arms and making the sign of the cross before the celebrations began.

Winger Joris Kayembe posted afterwards: “Thank you, Jesus. We did it together, a team, a group, a family and the supporters. Congo to the world, Congo on the map. God is great.”

That faith was not a one-off photo opportunity. The Leopards became one of the most openly Christian squads at the tournament, with social media clips showing prayer, worship and players speaking plainly about Jesus.

Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki has declared: “Jesus is my Lord and Saviour.”

Ballers In God, the football ministry which has highlighted the players’ witness, said: “In a tournament where many chase the spotlight, it’s beautiful to see players first turn their hearts toward the One who deserves all the glory.”
