Olympic athletes keeping the faith
The Olympics are almost with us, and Christian athletes will be centre stage again.
The games start on 26 July in Paris and will take in 16 French cities, plus Tahiti in French Polynesia.
Believers enjoyed many successes at the last Olympics, in Tokyo in 2021, and now we continue the feature started in last month’s edition showcasing Christian medallists.
Keni Harrison
The undefeated world record holder for the women’s 100m hurdles was America’s Keni Harrison, at 12.20 seconds. Though she didn’t beat this time in Tokyo, she did win silver.
The first thing you will read about Keni when you visit her Twitter and Instagram accounts is “I love Jesus”. Keni was adopted as a baby and has ten siblings, eight of whom were also adopted by her parents, including from Bolivia and South Korea.
Like so many athletes, her journey has been a winding one. She went into the hurdle trials for the 2016 Rio Olympics as the favourite but finished sixth. She took strength from the experience, however: “I gained a deeper connection to God each year I noticed my faith conquering ALL doubt.” Keni now says that “missing the Olympic team in 2016 has made me a stronger Christian athlete.”
After success in Japan, she acknowledged God in a social media post: “Thank You Lord for this gift and I will always glorify You with it.”
