Lonely Olympian finds deep faith

When Olympic gold-medal swimming hero Hunter Armstrong climbed out of the water at Rock City Church last year the ripple effect was about far more than personal glory.

The 24-year-old, who hails from Dover, Ohio, plunged into baptismal waters in a deeply symbolic act of faith — a public declaration that he is now fully committed to Jesus Christ.

Armstrong’s athletic CV is one to make any nation proud.

A two-time Olympian, world champion and former world record holder in the 50m backstroke, he has collected a glittering haul of medals on global stages, including team gold in both Tokyo and Paris relays.

Yet for this US sprint sensation, it was what happened away from the world’s fastest pools that marked his most seismic personal shift.

Armstrong revealed how the previous year saw him wrestling with loneliness and a sense that something essential was missing from his life.

It was during a Bible study with a chaplain and the encouragement of his brother that he felt stirred towards a deeper walk with Christ – something he’d never fully embraced, despite being baptised as an infant.
