Heavenly hosts joined child rescue
A British missionary has told how a terrifying late-night rescue in Cambodia turned into a moment of divine protection.
David Allen, who served with his wife Esther from 2011 to 2019, received a desperate phone call one night from a young mother in a church-supported programme. Her two-year-old son had been snatched by traffickers and taken to a notorious area.
“Without a second thought – and remembering that I am not the bravest person in the world – I got into a tuk-tuk,” David said.
Arriving at a dimly lit alley, he walked alone towards a group of men drinking outside a building.
“Don’t come with me,” he told his friend, fearing violence.
Inside, he found the child with four adults.
“What you are doing is wrong,” he told them, lifting the boy and walking straight back out.
Shockingly, no one tried to stop him.
“I was really, really shocked at what I had just done,” David admitted.
But the real twist came weeks later in church, when one of the men from that night turned up.
“Why did nobody try to stop me?” David asked.
“Stop you?” the man replied. “There was no chance… with that crowd you’d brought with you!” David has insisted he was alone – apart from what he now believes were angels.
The Bible says, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them” (Psalm 34:7, NIV).
