The wrestler who grappled with God

A former world heavyweight wrestling champion overcame addiction after giving his life to Jesus.

Shawn Michaels first won the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) top-weight crown at Wrestlemania XII in 1996, but he went on to become addicted to pain medications.

He was forced to retire in 1998 amid recurring health problems, but returned to WWE in 2002. 

In the interim, he found faith, with his former rivals noting the change when he returned to the ring, after he was previously known for his bad behaviour toward his peers and also outside the sport. Michaels recalls that he “began to drink more and started taking drugs and pills and chasing women” even before joining WWE.

On his first retirement, his wife urged him to seek spiritual help, and the wrestler known as the “Heart Break Kid” went to a church as part of a search for a Bible study group.
