Lord is pitch-perfect for Lioness
Lioness Michelle Agyemang says Jesus is at the centre of her life – on and off the pitch.
The 20-year-old Arsenal striker, named an MBE in June, told BBC One’s Songs of Praise: “Everything I have is thanks to God’s mercy and grace. No matter what I’m doing, faith is the key, the central thing.”
Born in Essex to Ghanaian parents, Agyemang joined Arsenal aged six and later studied business management at King’s College London.
She became a national hero at Euro 2025, scoring dramatic equalisers against Sweden and Italy as England retained their European crown.
After scoring, she dropped to her knees in prayer.
“I was on the ground praying and thanking God,” she said.
“Even on the pitch I’m praying for protection for me and the team as well as our opponents.”
Agyemang attended Sunday school from the age of five and now plays music in church.
She even took a piano to Switzerland during the Euros to help her relax.
The BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year is recovering from a serious knee injury, but her faith remains firm.
“I’ve learnt never to blame God but ask him what he wants me to learn from this,” she said.
Her message to anyone facing hardship is uncompromising: “Looking to Jesus is the only solution.”
