Scottie's putting God first

World No.1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has opened up about the driving force behind his meteoric rise.

And it’s not trophies, money or global fame, but his Christian faith.

The Texan, who has dominated the sport since his breakthrough Masters victory in April 2022 at Augusta National, said every swing started with a deeper question – purpose.

“I think it always goes back to the ‘Why?’” he explained.

“It’s not a bad thing to pursue excellence; the question is ‘Why?’” Scheffler has confirmed he will warm up for his defence of The Open title by playing the Scottish Open next month.

The American – who finished joint eighth last season – will join fellow double Masters winner and world No.2 Rory McIlroy, leading Scot and 2024 winner Robert MacIntyre.

Defending champion Chris Gotterup will also play at the Renaissance Club from 9-12 July.

It will be Scheffler’s fifth appearance at the East Lothian course.

“I always enjoy coming to the Genesis Scottish Open and taking on the challenge of links-style golf as part of an exciting couple of weeks in the UK,” he said.

“The tournament always has a strong field and the Scottish fans help to make it a fun week.”

The announcement came as the 29-year-old opted to skip the Truist Championship ahead of the PGA Championship.

But no matter where he plays, Scheffler’s motivation is not just to play well.

He said: "It’s an act of worship! I play golf to glorify God. When I go out to practise, I’m glorifying God by going out and practising. I want to get the most out of that time with my practice.”
