'Humbler' Becker finds faith in prison

Tennis ace Boris Becker conquered Wimbledon at 17 – but his toughest battle came far from Centre Court.

The six-time Grand Slam champion was jailed for 30 months in April 2022 after hiding assets from creditors following bankruptcy.

He served 231 days at Wandsworth and Huntercombe prisons.

Before sentencing, Becker attended church and prayed daily.

Behind bars, faith became his “handrail” as fame vanished and he became simply an inmate number.

“Religion and faith are very important in prison,” he said after his release.

“I am a Christian.”

Threatened by another prisoner, Becker later embraced and forgave him when he apologised.

The former champion also spoke with a chaplain about his fears.

Prison, he said, left him wiser, humbler and determined to accept responsibility for his actions.
