Dok's stats point to God

The build-up to Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool was meant to be about Pep Guardiola and the 1,000th match of his glittering managerial career.

Instead, as City swept to a commanding 3-0 win, it was their electric winger Jeremy Doku who stole the headlines. Doku was simply unplayable. In the first half he terrorised Liverpool’s defence, winning a penalty and dominating duels, dribbles and chances created.

After the break, he capped the performance with a sensational goal that lit up the Etihad and sealed the victory.

Statisticians were left scrambling. The 23-year-old became the first Premier League player since Eden Hazard in 2019 to score, win 10 duels, complete seven dribbles, create three chances and hit three shots on target – all before being substituted off in the 74th minute.

But for Doku, the story goes far deeper than numbers or highlights reels.

Speaking after the match, he pointed to faith as the source of his new freedom and fearlessness on the pitch.

“What changed for me this season, I have God in my life,” he said. “That’s what changed, and that’s what you can see.

“On the pitch, I have his presence with me. That’s the difference. I’m just happy that now I can just deliver the way I want to play without any fear or doubt or anything.”

To celebrate the goal, Doku first pointed to himself, then wagged his finger.

He added: “It’s the centre of my life. There’s nothing more important to me than faith.”
