Bukele is Book ally
El Salvador's president Nayib Bukele has declared his belief in Jesus Christ and the truth of the Bible – despite refusing to attach himself to a religious label.
The 45-year-old leader said: “I’m not someone who believes much in religious liturgy. However, I believe in God, in Jesus Christ. I believe in his Word revealed in the Holy Bible.”
Bukele, who was born in San Salvador in 1981, has a Muslim father and Catholic mother.
But he insists faith is personal, adding: “I know that God rejects no one because of their origins.”
In a widely shared Instagram video, Bukele also defended everyone’s freedom to read the Bible and discover its message for themselves.
After beginning his second presidential term in June 2024, Bukele told interviewer Tucker Carlson that seeking God’s wisdom was his government’s first priority.
He said he and his security cabinet prayed for wisdom during their battle against El Salvador’s violent gangs.
Bukele described the country’s dramatic reduction in murders as a miracle, saying: “It can’t be explained without God.”
Despite controversy surrounding his tough security policies, his message remains uncompromising – prayer works, the Bible matters and Jesus is real.
