Bake Off winner Jasmine rose to occasion

At 23, Jasmine Mitchell has not only become the youngest ever The Great British Bake Off champion to earn five Star Baker awards.

And she did it while leaning on her Christian faith as her firm foundation.

In an interview with Premier Christian News, the Edinburgh-born medical student said her “faith has become stronger and stronger over the last year.” For Jasmine, applying to Bake Off was “a complete whim”, prompted only by a friend’s encouragement.

But once in the tent, she found herself repeatedly drawing on faith under pressure.

“Being under the high pressure of TV really pushed me to rely on Jesus, on God, because there were a lot of situations where I just felt completely unequipped,” she reflected.

Jasmine revealed that as she walked from the green room to the tent – or simply waited behind the scenes – she would “pray the Lord’s Prayer a lot in my head. It didn’t take away the stress, but I felt like God was walking along beside me with it.”

At the end of each week she said she would “look back… and just feel completely held by God.”

Her love for baking, she explained, is rooted in a childhood shaped by Christian hospitality.

She said: “I’ve grown up in a family which gathers around food… I’ve learnt a lot from my mum, aunts, family and friends who love bringing people together around the table.” This faith helped her navigate not just the Bake Off whirlwind, but also a difficult personal journey.

She has lived with alopecia since the age of ten, and during her teens wore wigs to blend in.
