Great leadership? Think people

Leadership is rewarding – and demanding. Drawing on years of leadership, coaching and strategic support, Mark Ryan explores three searching questions: how do I lead myself well, lead people well, and remain authentic? This second article in the series will help leaders build flourishing ministries and lead with integrity. Great leadership is more than vision.

When most people think about leadership, they think about vision – inspiring messages, strategic plans, big ideas and courageous decisions. Vision certainly matters, but leadership involves far more than communicating where we are going.

Leadership is ultimately about people.

No matter how compelling our vision, if we cannot connect with people, build trust and create healthy environments, progress will always be limited.

As ministry leaders, we must balance two important responsibilities. We need to lead people well and build ministries that work well.

These are the twin responsibilities of relational and organisational leadership. One focuses on people; the other on systems. Healthy ministries need both.

The apostle Paul offers a compelling picture of relational leadership in 1 Thessalonians 2:10-12.

Reflecting on his ministry among the Thessalonians, he describes how he lived with integrity and cared for them “as a father deals with his own children”.

He continues: “encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.” Paul does not present himself primarily as a manager or strategist, but as someone in relationship with others.

Modern leadership literature often focuses on skills and techniques.

Paul reminds us that leadership begins with people.

Before people trust our direction, they need confidence in our character.

Before they receive our instruction, they need to experience our care.

The most influential leaders are not always the most gifted communicators.

Often, they are those who genuinely care about others.
