From 'backslider' to Spirit-filled evangelist
From pot-smoking ‘backslider’ to evangelist, Abraham Aguilar was transformed during a church service – and he has the figures to prove it.
Aguilar led 895 people to make decisions to follow Jesus from 2023 to 2024 at Palmdale High School in California.
But it was a very different story before the student went to an apparently routine service at Potter’s House Church in Palmdale.
He usually sat in the church’s ‘backslider lane’, confirming his status as a former Christian who had returned to his previous habits.
“My life was completely backslidden,” Aguilar told God Reports. When he felt his dream of becoming a professional soccer player slipping away, he fell into a cycle of sex and smoking marijuana.
Attending services was a chore completed because his mother demanded it as a condition of living in her house.
Eventually, the persistent preaching began to have an impact, softening Aguilar’s heart to the extent he joined a men’s discipleship seminar – but only when he was promised a meal out in return.
After the seminar, something changed – and then he went to that life-altering church service.
“I felt God saying, ‘It’s either now or never’.”
Aguilar asked to receive Jesus and said a prayer with the pastor.
“I surrendered to Jesus and my life started changing,” he recalled.
