Drug lord 'freed' in jail cell

It took 22 chaotic years to get there, but as Daniel Baker read a Christian book in his jail cell, it all suddenly became clear.

Years of abuse, violence, cheating, establishing a drugs empire were forgotten amid the book’s simple invitation: “Rest your eyes on my face, the lover of your soul.”

For Baker – facing a 19-month jail term for various crimes – the words carried a deeper resonance.

He told CBN: “It spoke to me, like, God was telling me, ‘Look to my face. I chose to show myself to the world through Jesus. Look to Jesus. You’re going to find the truth when you look to Jesus. It’s only through Jesus that we’re going to get to heaven. There’s no other way.’

“That was the moment where my heart was like, ‘Okay, God, I’m all in. Like, whatever you have for me, I will do it. I will do what you tell me to do.’”

He had no clue what that new life would involve, but it would be nothing like the one that led him to that cell.

Baker grew up in Marion, Indiana, in an abusive home and, soon after his parents divorced when he was aged seven, he was molested by a family member.

“I remember feeling very much unloved, abandoned. I got in this state of like rage and anger, especially towards God.”

Aged 16, he decided to become a drug dealer, with even that move motivated by anger.

“Selling drugs was power, money. I had influence over people with drugs. People wanted drugs. I was here to sell drugs and destroy lives.”
