Denzel’s plunge of faith
Movie superstar Denzel Washington has made a public commitment of faith by being baptised.
The 70-year-old has been increasingly vocal in sharing the Christian beliefs he’s had since childhood, with his baptism becoming the latest milestone.
In a livestreamed service at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York, the actor also received the minister’s licence which will allow him to be ordained.
Washington, a multiple Golden Globe, Academy and Tony Award winner, revealed that the baptism fulfilled a prophecy he received when he was aged 20, when he was told he would “travel the world and preach to millions of people”.
The star of films including Cry Freedom, Glory and The Equalizer series made the faith commitment a week before turning 70.
“It took a while, but I’m here,” he said. “To God be the glory. Hallelujah! Anything I can do, I will do for this church, the Almighty. I just want to be in that number when the saints go marching in.”
The father-of four was joined by his wife of 40 years, Pauletta, who was in the congregation supporting him as the service was conducted by Archbishop Christopher Bryant. He posted on Facebook: “We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy, having received his minister’s license in the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment.”
Washington has spoken repeatedly of the need to use the acting talents gifted to him by God wisely and with modesty.
