
Churches booming in 'Quiet Revival'
Think churches are cold, empty and the preserve of old, white women? Think again, says the Bible Society, whose research points to a ‘Quiet Revival’ with attendances booming.
Contrary to the oft-quoted belief that Christianity is in decline, latest research reveals a 56% increase in church attendance since 2018. The most notable surge comes among Generation Z, where attendance has quadrupled from 4 to 16 per cent, while growth extends across all age groups and demographics.
Significantly, young men – previously the least likely to attend church – now outnumber young women in joining congregations.
Dr Rob Barward-Symmons of the Bible Society highlighted the role of churches in supporting young adults struggling with anxiety and isolation, noting many are turning away from harmful online spaces in favour of spiritual connection.
The findings also challenge stereotypes of churchgoers as predominantly elderly, white, and female.
